Course Description:

Many medical device and diagnostic companies are pursuing markets abroad to create new revenue streams or in some cases, selling internationally prior to their commercialization in the U.S. In this seminar, representatives from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Small Business Administration (SBA) and UPS will help you navigate the logistics of selling your products internationally. A panel discussion including a medical technology company with extensive international sales experience, will follow the presentations

Presenter Bios:

Jerry Avila, Northern California Regional Manager; Small Business Administration

Jerry Avila has over 25 years of international banking experience in both the public and private sectors. As a career international trade specialist, he has managed Barclays Bank's Trade Finance Marketing and International Operations group in San Francisco responsible for Northern California until Barclays sold its California group in 1988. Subsequently he managed U.S. Bank's trade finance activities in various states and it's California EDGE Corporation which he helped establish in Northern California. He first managed US Bank's Trade Services in Oregon then subsequently in California and Nevada until it's sale. Following US Bank, he was appointed by Governor Gray Davis as the Director of the California Export Finance Office (CEFO) and subsequently as the Acting Director of the Office of Small Business. Up until the recall of Gray Davis and the closure of the Technology, Trade & Commerce Agency he was responsible for a number of State guarantee programs which included CEFO, the Loan Guarantee Program which in itself had over $110 million in guarantees supporting over $210 million in loans to small businesses statewide plus the RUST, SSED and Child Care Programs. He is currently with the U.S. Small Business Adminstrations Office of International Trade's Export Solutions Group serving as the Northern California Regional Manager promoting SBA's International Programs by working directly with lenders and California businesses.

 

Anthony Hill, US Department of Commerce, Commercial Service, Sacramento US Export Assistance Center

Tony Hill is the Senior International Trade Specialist for the promotion of exports of Medical Devices and Health Technology in the greater js/tiny_mce/themes/advanced/langs/en.js"> Sacramento area for the US Department of Commerce, Commercial Service. The Sacramento office of the Commercial Service covers twenty-two counties of Northeastern California. Tony assists U.S. companies in all aspects of international sales, from market research and analysis to match-making with foreign distributors to navigating foreign government regulations. Tony advises companies on a variety of issues faced by exporters of medical devices including foreign country regulations, certifications, logistics, customs clearance, documentation, and market access. Previously, Tony was a Senior International Economist for the Department of Commerce, Import Administration, for five years helping enforce US laws on unfair trade practices. Before joining the Department of Commerce, Tony was a Financial Services Industry Economist for the Producer Price Index of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Prior to that, Tony worked as an Trade Finance Research Economist for Bank One International. Tony received an MBA in International Finance from Thunderbird, The School of Global Management and a BA degree in Economics and International Management from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

 

Bob Wieland, North California District Marketing, UPS - Northern California District

 

Bob Wieland began his UPS career in Oakland, CA. in May of 1989.  Over his 22 year career, Bob has held a number of positions in Industrial Engineering and Marketing.  In 1999, Bob moved to Dallas, TX. and held various positions within the UPS Southwest Region Marketing function.  In 2004, Bob was accepted an assignment in UPS Corporate Marketing in Atlanta, GA., where he held positions New Product Development where he was a key member of a team that developed UPS’ Healthcare Marketing Strategy through the evaluation and development of products designed specifically for the industry.  In 2010, Bob accepted the assignment as the Healthcare Marketing Manager for Northern California.
 
Bob has an MBA from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University, Hayward.
 
Bob has been married to his wife Traci for 17 years and has two children.
