McClellan Technology Incubator

McClellan Technology Incubator (MTI) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization established as part of an economic stimulus plan to assist emerging businesses in the technology sector with an emphasis on job creation for the region. During the 1980's and 1990's the Sacramento area was hit hard by the closure of three military institutions. The base closures meant the loss of thousands of jobs for the region. The loss of this skilled labor force provided the main impetus for the incubator's creation.
MTI is located on the former McClellan Air Force Base. The Base officially closed in July 2001, and the incubator was one of the first buildings to convert from military to private sector use. The incubator building has over 21,000 square feet of office space; with much of the space consisting of common area space for all tenants to have access to. The area surrounding the incubator was fully landscaped and three sides of the building contain parking spaces to serve the tenants, staff, and guests.
The building renovation was funded by the Sacramento Housing & Redevelopment Agency (SHRA), which received a grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to improve the building. A total of $1.2 million dollars (1/2 in EDA grant funds and 1/2 in SHRA matching funds) was invested into the building to correct code violations and upgrade the building into class A commercial office space. Office spaces were created to fit the needs of clients that range in number of employees from one to ten. The largest office space is over 1,000 square feet with the smallest space only 170 square feet. The incubator can accommodate a maximum of 27 offices. Three large conference rooms provide an abundance of space for tenants to hold meetings, seminars, and/or training forums in. A small kitchen / dining area is also present at the incubator which provides a place for tenants to gather and discuss events occurring within their business.
