Course Description:
Medical device inventors, entrepreneurs and managers often research published peer reviewed clinical studies as well as perform other forms of more basic medical research and study to inform themselves on the area in which they are developing new products. Basic market research for new medical devices includes a thorough understanding of the state of the art in the affected clinical practices, the people involved in defining the standard of care, and what it took for prior disruptions to get adopted, in order to define the development, clinical trial and business development pathway for their new product. The UC Davis Health System Blaisdell Medical Library is a vast wealth of information about medicine and healthcare, invaluable to inventors and entrepreneurs seeking to develop new medical products. The library is open to the public and this seminar will familiarize participants with the library resources.
Participants will learn:
- Basic seaching of PubMed - especially for background on diseases and medical device information.
- Searching other databases for medical device information
- Resources for marketing information
- How to access relevant journals and newsletters on medical devices, and other healthcare
- How to set up periodic (monthy/weekly) alerts for topics of ongoing interest
Particiants will be provided:
- Access to a desktop computer
- Time for resource exploration, including hands-on exercises
- A tour of the library
Presenter:
Rebecca Davis, Head Librarian, Blaisdell Medical Library, UC Davis Health System
Rebecca is the head of the Blaisdell Medical Library , with over 25 years experience as a medical librarian. She has a BA in English from Pitzer College and a Masters in Library Science from UCLA. She came to the Carlson Health Sciences Library at UC Davis in 1985 after an internship at the National Library of Medicine as a reference librarian. She became head of reference in 1993; coordinator of outreach services in 2000, and head of the Blaisdell Medical Library in 2006-2007 and 2008 to the present. Her forte is teaching adult learners.

General Admission: $34; SARTA Members: $19
Price includes free continental breakfast. Parking is an additional $6 therefore the General Admission is reduce by $6 for this particular seminar.
